Biography of Henri Corbin

Henri Corbin was a French philosopher and Islamic scholar, renowned for his authoritative research on Iranian Sufi mysticism and Shiite Gnosticism. He was a student of Étienne Gilson, Jean Baruzi, and Louis Massignon. Corbin began his career in the Manuscripts Department of the National Library of Paris. In 1937, he published the first French translation of Heidegger's "What is Metaphysics?". From 1939 to 1945, he worked at the French Institute in Istanbul and established the Iranian Studies Department at the French Institute in Tehran, where he initiated the series of research and publications known as the "Library of Iranian Studies".

In 1954, Corbin became the director of the Research Center for Islam and Arab Religions at the School for Advanced Studies in Paris. In 1974, he founded the International Center for Comparative Religious Studies at the University of Saint John in Jerusalem.
